When Should You Visit Otaru? Climate, Seafood and Festivals
This guide is for visitors who are choosing a month to visit Otaru and want to know what the weather is like, which seafood is in season and which events the city's tourism association lists. It also tells you what to wear when snow arrives.
We used the Otaru Tourism Association's English climate, events and information pages and its Japanese pages on the city, autumn events and emergencies. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. Event details come from the association's own list, so confirm dates with the organiser before you go. We name no hotels or restaurants.
The weather through the year
The association's English page says Otaru has a comparatively mild climate for Hokkaido. Average temperatures are colder than in Tokyo, generally by about one month. Cherry blossoms are in full bloom around Golden Week, from late April to early May. Summer days can pass 30 degrees Celsius, but after the Obon holiday in mid-August, mornings and nights turn cool quickly. The long winter runs from late November to March.
- Spring: cool by day and cold at night and in the morning. Snow can remain on the road until early April, and puddles and snow are easy to slip on.
- Summer: low humidity and little rain. The page says that once real summer starts, many days pass 20 degrees, and that in midsummer you can swim in the sea. Bring one long-sleeved set, because the wind is cold at night.
- Autumn: the page describes one month when the minimum drops below 10 degrees and the wind feels cold, with the first snow possible late in that month. In the next, the daytime maximum falls below 10 degrees and it snows, so winter clothes are needed by the end of that month. It does not name the months in the text we could read, so check the forecast for your dates.
- Winter: from mid-December snow stays overnight and the cover thickens. The page advises a winter coat, layers, gloves, a hat that covers the ears and shoes with thick, deep-grooved soles. It says anti-slip shoe covers are sold at convenience stores and station shops.
Seafood by season
The association's Japanese page lists what is in season.
- March to May: herring, spring mantis shrimp and sweet shrimp. The page says herring come in large schools to spawn and turn the sea milky white.
- June to August: sea urchin, hokki clam and scallops.
- September to November: autumn mantis shrimp and abalone. The page says autumn shrimp have firmer flesh and that a mantis shrimp festival is held at this time.
- December to February: sculpin, cod and flounder, which suit hot pots in the cold.
The English food page adds that sushi made with local seafood is the best choice, and that the Otaru signature sweets include skewered dumplings and beko mochi.
Festivals and events
The English events page names two big ones. The Otaru Ushio Festival is held on the last Friday, Saturday and Sunday of July, with a parade of fishing boats in the port and fireworks on the first and last days. The Snow Light Path takes place every February, with candles placed in the historic townscape. The page says around 500,000 visitors come in recent years. The association's list shows the 2027 edition starting on 6 February.
For this autumn, the association's Japanese pages list, among others:
- The 77th Otaru City Culture Festival, from 1 October to 8 November 2026.
- The YOI-TARU Taste Festival 2026, from 10 to 12 October.
- Rail Carnival in Otaru, about the autumn along the old Temiya Line, from 10 October.
- An autumn festival with a foliage gondola at Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort, from 1 to 20 October. The page says that on a clear day you can see Otaru Port and Ishikari Bay from the summit.
- A guide-led walk on 18 October with the city's "Otaru guides" on Japan Heritage themes, which the page lists as coal, iron and port history and the northern trading ships.
We have not checked each event's venue, price or booking rules.
If you get sick or need help
The English site has a page listing medical institutions in Otaru that offer foreign language services, with separate lists for dentists and other clinics. It also points to an international medical project in Sapporo for tourists who get ill or injured on a trip. The emergency page names the ambulance, rescue and fire service and the Otaru night emergency medical centre. The association's information centres can advise on sightseeing, and our guide to getting to Otaru lists them.
Where our sources overlap
The Japanese page on autumn events says the season brings pleasant temperatures and colourful leaves, while the English climate page says October already has a minimum below 10 degrees. Both can be true on the same day: the page itself says the temperature gap between day and night is large, so dress in layers.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- Monthly average temperatures in numbers, and which month each autumn description belongs to, because the English page shows them only as a chart or without month labels in the text.
- This year's autumn colour dates.
- Prices and booking rules for the events.
